Inquisitor and Cha-Ching

Inquisitcha-2Yesterday I found a couple of apps. Who said there aren’t a lot of Apps for the Mac? Anyway, I came across one app called Inquisitor. Inquisitor is a little plug-in for Safari that is similar to spotlight. I like to think of it more like having Quicksilver for websites right into Safari. You type in anything in the search bar and web page options start popping up fast with star ratings its really cool. I’m finding it very useful so far. The other App that I found was Cha-Ching its still in beta but its a slick money management app that allows you to add pictures of your purchases and such. Kinda nice for keeping an inventory. You can see you outgoing and incoming cash as well as your balance, plus it supports smart tags for searching. If you’re a visual oriented person or looking for an easy way to see where your money is coming and going its a nice little App. Its in beta so the features aren’t extensive yet but more is on its way.

Birthday Pix

Img 2332It was my birthday a few weeks back and a few of my friends and myself had been discussing the fact that we live in the fingerlakes region, famous for its wineries and none of us had been on a wine tour. Anyway, for my birthday (actually a few days afterwards) we decided to set out on our little wine tour adventure. The day turned out to be perfectly Sunny and quite nice although it had been rainy and grey earlier. We stopped at a few wineries on Cayuga Lake but decided that we would visit Lamoreaux Landing on Seneca lake after we had tasted a few not so great ones on Cayuga lake. We liked couldn’t find a selection at Lamoreaux Landing that we didn’t like but we all agreed (except for our more responsible friend Mary) that the Vidal Ice Wine was quite lovely. They say that its a dessert wine we say its simply dessert in a bottle. Good thing the price was a bit on the expensive side to keep us from buying too much of this stuff. We also drove around and took in a bit of the country atmosphere, lake views and visited a squash farm where we bought more than a few butternut squashes. Fun was had by all and it was one of the most memorable birthdays that I’ve had in a while.

iTunes 7 Woes

Itunes7Woes-1I tried logging into the ITunes store yesterday to check out if the new Episode of BSG was available and to see if they had any DCB albums available and noticed that it was taking a while to get on. After a while I got an error message saying that the network request could not be made. This was of course odd coz I’ve been running 7.01 for a while now and haven’t had this issue before. I was also able to get to the net just fine so my network connection wasn’t at fault. After fiddling around for a while I went on line and found some discussion on the topic. Basically, more than a few folks are having the same issue that I’m now having. It seems they started having the problems before me though as I said mine have been working up until yesterday. Apple has yet to address the problems seems to me that they need to update 7.01. I was able to get to BSG after following a tip from one of the persons on the discussion forum suggested. I just clicked another tab then clicked back, then click another and clicked back again and somehow it let me in eventually. Something is very wrong though coz you shouldn’t have to do this. Perhaps the iTunes store have finally reached its limits.

A t-shirt for $150?

Grooverider1-1 Grooverider2I was zipping around the net as usual and came across what apparently is a smart fabric interface shirt (grooveRider) for your iPod by a company called Urban Tool. It’s compatible with the video iPod, Mini and Nano and comes in black & savannah for females and black and khaki for males. It is also washable and I’m wondering how the controls work after all the washing it will get esp. during the summer. The big deal of course is that you can control your iPod via your chest area. Nice idea but I’m having some issues with why one has to pay $150 US for this thing. Just to be cool it will cost me more than my iPod Nano. Guess this one is for you folks who have money to burn on cool. I you have that much money to burn on cool consider donating to Project Red or somewhere else that’s trying to help out some folks.

The gear I need to take better photos

AddOnce in a while actually now it seems like once a day I get an email from Apple advertising their products. They do it in kind of a cool way but I really got a kick out of this last one. The title was “the gear I needed to take better photos.” Since I like taking photos with my little digital camera this peaked my interest so I loaded the images. The first suggestion by this ad was to advance my photography in big bold letters with a Macbook for $1099 Step 1: Start with a few upgrades the upgrades listed was the Cannon digital Rebel XT- $799.95 (the thing looks big to me) I tend to like slim cameras. Next up was Aperture at $299 Step 2: Find the perfect composition: One pixel perfect 23″ Apple Cinema Display would suffice for $999 and 1 Cannon EF 75-300 telephoto zoom lens at $249.95. Step 3 is to shoot, shoot and shoot some more with a Hitachi 4GB Microdrive for $149.95 and a Lacie d2 300GB hard drive extreme for $219.95. The grand total is $3816.80. WOW I do admit that you get a lot for your $ but I most certainly don’t have this kind of money to spend just to take better photos. This is for the photo pros among us which I am not. My 4 megapixel Casio Exilim while a bit on the old side now does a pretty decent job for posting stuff on the web which is where most of my photos end up anyway. I do know someone who would love all this equipment and has a wife who likes to shower him with gadgets for Christmas. Perhaps I’ll forward this one to him.

Red Apple Nano

Screenshot 01I opened my mailbox today and there was an email from Apple titled “Turn up the volume in the fight against AIDS.
A red Nano was looking at me… Now I own a black Nano already and does not intend on buying another Nano red white or any other color for that matter. I understand that this is all a part of the Product Red partnership and $10 of the $199 I would spend on the Nano goes to fight AIDS in Africa and such. Its a good thing don’t get me wrong but then I looked at World Vision website and for the $199 I would spend on a new Nano that I don’t need I could educate an orphaned child (whose parents died of AIDS) for over two years, give an orphan care kit for $127 and more than a few other options. For me this is a better choice and I’ll go this route. This would work for someone who is going to run out and buy one of the Nanos anyway. So if you are thinking about buying a new Nano chose GO RED. I can see these being quite popular around the Christmas season. Too bad they don’t offer the video iPods in this color. Maybe one of those would pop-up soon enough.

Columbus Day

ImagesHere it is Columbus Day and I’m home doing laundry, drinking some Theraflu concoction and trying to finish up a website that I started and decided to redo after a few attempts at using iWeb to do it. I had to start over in Dreamweaver coz it would have taken too much to get this working in iWeb. I like the program for putting up something quick and template based sites but trying to modify CSS files in there is not for the faint of heart (the program won’t even let you do rollovers easily, you have to trick it to do anything custom). Anyway, I’ve been busy for the last couple of weeks hence I’ve neglected to update this blog very much. Last week was especially busy since I was working on a grant for work that took longer than I had planned on (it was hard work and I hope that we are successful in our efforts). It was just one of those things that had to be written though. Anyway, two cool things happened last week the first is that I went to a Third Day concert with my 3 friends Jen (yes all three of them are named Jen). Third Day was the last band that played and everyone was screaming and doing their thing but I was more impressed with the David Crowder Band and Hyperstatic Union. I really like David Crowder’s voice, the words of the songs are thoughtful, and the sound is just really cool. Hyperstatic Union was really having fun onstage and you couldn’t help but join in. My favorite song from them is Praying for Sunny Days because living in Upstate, NY I do this quite often (This weekend have been unusually Sunny). Third Day was just OK, the songs were very worshipful but the problem there was that the music was turned up way too loud and you couldn’t hear the lead singer very well (who was a bit under the weather). Too bad! I got their latest album anyway.

AserverappThe second cool thing I did although work related was that I went to a seminar on what’ s coming in the next release of the software that I use everyday for work. although the Powerpoint presentations lacked that Apple Style Keynote presentation zeal the demos were really cool and I’m pretty excited about ArcGIS Server which allows you to edit a geographic database via a web browser. The fun we can have with this :-) Exciting, Exciting… well, I’ve gabbed on and on have to go check on my laundry and start on that website again.

Homeless World Cup

Story.Homeless.Soccer1.Afp.I’m a World Cup Fan having recently watched the French get beaten by Italy in the last one and enjoying it play-by-play. Growing up in Jamaica I watched a lot of soccer and even played some myself. I was very intrigued when I came across this story in the offbeat section of CNN.com and thought that I would include the post. The original article as appears below is here.

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (Reuters) — Many of the soccer players representing their countries in an international tournament in South Africa this week were remarkably gaunt, sallow-looking and groomed haphazardly.

They looked, in fact, as if they had spent the past few years living on the streets. Indeed, that is where these improbable athletes had been spending much of their time before arriving at the Homeless World Cup in Cape Town.

The annual tournament, now in its fourth year and ending on Saturday, has brought together 500 players from 48 countries in a project aimed at helping homeless people turn their lives around.

“It helps primarily in terms of psychological changes … homeless people have no self-respect, little self-esteem,” Mel Young, president and co-founder of the group that organizes the competition, said in an interview.

The idea behind the tournament was to give participants an aim in life, and for those addicted to drugs or alcohol, an incentive to sober up.

“What happens here is a major thing. They’re standing singing the national anthem, they’re representing their country proudly, they’re playing in a competition which is real, and people are according them respect and taking them seriously,” Young said.

Interest in the Homeless World Cup has come from many quarters. South African President Thabo Mbeki opened the tournament last Sunday, and top professionals from clubs like Manchester United and South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs have offered to help train players.

Vocal crowds of around 2,000 have flocked to the matches, held on a large parking lot in central Cape Town.

The pace of the matches is fast; four players on each team play two seven-minute periods on a pitch the size of a tennis court.

“It’s very fast, it’s hard, it’s high scoring, it’s great for spectators,” said Johannes Krasa, 34, who plays for Austria. “There’s non-stop action. I love it.”

The traditional skills of conventional soccer do not always help in these street soccer games, as the English side found when they were defeated 5-3 in the preliminary rounds by Kazakhstan, most of whose squad are paunchy and over 30.

England’s Tony Peacock, 18, admitted to being overconfident. “We thought we’re all young guys, fit, and if you look at the Kazakhstan players … well. But they know how to use the ball.”

Krasa said the Kazakhstan players illustrated the principle that you cannot judge a person by appearances, adding that he had learned a lot on his trip to South Africa.

“When I see the situation in Africa, I know that although I am a homeless man, I am a rich man in comparison … I have really nothing, but they (Africans) have nothing … I don’t know how they can live,” he said.

Surveys conducted after the previous Homeless World Cup, held in Scotland, showed that 80 percent of those who took part had changed their lives for the better in major ways.

“They came off drugs, got houses, got training, got jobs,” Young said.

The tournament was first held in 2003 in Austria with just five countries competing.
